How To Start Grant Writing: 1 2 3

All non-profits face the same pressure when it comes to raising money, so why do some succeed while others fail? Why do some organizations get funded year after year, while others submit over and over without any funding? Why do some organizations never even start submitting grants, keeping them selves from receiving potentially thousands of dollars?

The biggest reason most non-profits don’t get funded is because they never submit! Starting the process of grant writing can seem daunting, but if you just take it in small increments, setting small goals, before you know it, your organization will be on the road to successfully submitting award winning grant applications.

1.First, you must have your 501(c)3 designation from the IRS. While some funders allow for fiscal agency (meaning, another organization that does have a 501(c)3 can submit on your behalf, and keep a percentage of the award to administer the grant funds), you really need to obtain your own designation to qualify for the most grant opportunities.

2.Second, gather your essential documents. While these vary from grant to grant, funders usually ask for enough information to make sure that your organization is legitimate and that it fits in with the area that they fund. These documents usually include your articles of incorporation; past, current, and projected organizational budget; list of Board of Directors; one-page history of organization; media reviews, programs, any other publicity you may have; audited financial statement or most recent tax filing; and resumes or bios of key staff.

3.Third, find a funder. With the internet, it is simple to search for funders who make grants to your type of organization, in your state or region. The application is usually straightforward (although it might be lengthy) and accompanied by a set of guidelines that explain step by step exactly how to fill out the application, what documents to attach, how many copies to make, where to send, and the all-important deadline. Do not miss the deadline.

That’s it. Keep your writing to-the-point and simple, and if you have any questions at all, call the person listed in the guidelines as the grants administrator. Just be polite and introduce yourself, admit that this is your first application, and ask for any advice she may be able to offer. Often, funders offer a workshop or may even have samples of funded grants available.

Remember, if you don’t submit, you won’t get funded. So give it a try. You have nothing to lose, and thousands of dollars to gain.

Let’s say you have more than 20 years experience in your chosen field. For the sake of this article, let’s say you have been in the nonprofit field for 25 years and are at the very top of your game. And let’s say you’re a bit bored with the hum-drum day-to-day routine of being an executive director. You love nonprofit sector, but you need more of a challenge and you yearn to help people grow and achieve success in their nonprofit careers. Plus, you’d like to earn a little bit more money and are a bit tired of the board of directors overseeing everything you do.

Perhaps it’s time to go into business for yourself. Perhaps it’s time to become a consultant, a coach, a speaker and trainer. The thought is exciting, albeit a little frightening. You’re current salary is certainly respectable for a person with your skills and experience, and the health insurance and retirement plan are comforting benefits that you don’t want to relinquish. But none of these factors have been able to sufficiently scratch that darned itch that keeps telling you it’s time to start your own nonprofit consulting business.

Going into business for yourself as a consultant, coach, or speaker (or all of the above) requires determination, a little self-sacrifice (in the beginning), and a lot of experience. People hire consultants because they need the expertise of someone who has been there and done thathundreds of times. There are consultants in literally every career field, and once they become accustomed to the process of generating clientele, they can make over double what they were earning as employees. In fact, recent statistics show that successful and established consultants can make anywhere from $1,200 to $5,000 per day.

There is power and prestige in consulting that can rarely be found in management positions, even executive positions. The power comes from calling the shots as a business owner and making sure people know they need you; the prestige comes from being the very best in your fieldand making sure people know it.

But there’s a not so subtle difference in owning your own business and owning your own consulting firm. Lots of people own businesses. My fianc owns a deli, my father owns a small publishing business, and my mother owns a bakery. But owning your own consulting firm lets people know that you’re the crme de la crme in your field – and if they want to rise to the top like you have, they’ll hire you to help them.

Consulting firms, like the one you will soon own, can be anything from a one man show to a large agency boasting senior and junior associates. Most consultants make their day to day income from coaching and mentoring individuals in the field – charging anywhere from $300 (for junior level staffers) to $500 (for senior executives) per hour. They also assist clients with organizational development, strategic and financial planning, and a host of other services including workshop facilitation and board and staff retreats. And if they like to speak in front of audiences, many consultants make thousands of dollars simply talking to a crowd for a few hours about their experiences and knowledge.

While it’s not as easy as 1-2-3 to quite your job and start making $5,000 a day as a consultant, it’s certainly not as difficult as it looks – especially if you’re very very good at what you do and have expertise that few can match. Start off as a moonlighter, which is the term used when someone has a day job but works on their own business in the evenings. Make a simple business card for yourself and during your lunch hour at work, go to chamber of commerce or rotary meetings where you can network and talk to people about your new consulting practice.

It’s not too difficult to pick up a small client or two this way, and once you do a good job for them and build confidence in yourself you’ll begin to branch out and up. People will hear about you, your phone will start ringing, those simple business cards you handed out at the rotary meetings will change hands and generate bigger clients, and you’ll begin to realize that maybe you really can quit that hum-drum job and make it big on your very own.

It is never too early to consider a career and the things you can do before college to help keep your career options open. Career counsellors assist people to explore, pursue and attain their career goals. Counselling is actively listening to an individual’s story and communicating understanding, respect and empathy; clarifying goals and assisting individuals with the decision-making process.

Employers do not want to hire an absentee person. Believe it or not, the employer will invest a lot of money to hire the person they feel will be the best asset to them. They want someone that will be on the job and able to complete the assigned tasks. One way to determine this is to check your high school or college attendance record.

Let’s take these further. To enhance your career, hardworking, humility and honesty is essential. Hardworking is fairly straightforward. It just means nothing comes easy. There are no rewards in the working world that comes without hard work. In fact, there is nothing in life that comes without hard work.

There are many networking events in November and December – in your social life, in your community, and in your professional circles. Think of all the companies having holiday parties. Many charities have their last fundraisers of the tax year in November and December. Book sales, holiday fairs and other celebrations make this the best time of year for productive networking!

Evaluate your progress after last career planning: it is not about dwelling in your past, rather understanding the direction of your career since the last time you planned it- whether you followed what you planned, how much you deviated, whether you progress is significant or have you become stagnant or even treading a regressing path.

Building a network of contacts and maintaining constant touch with them in one of the surefire method of effective career building. Today many organizations resort to getting reference from its own employees rather than going through the advertisement or job consultancy route while hiring. This not only saves some time and money for them but they know that the minimum job quality is assured through reference.

Write down your plan to achieve those small goals. Here comes the real planning step. Know your outcome. Know your situation. Know your competency. Know you competitor. You should write down all the analysis so that you know what you can do and what you can not. If not, how you are going to acquire those skills. Write down all the activities you need to do in days, weeks and months.

Career goals need to be manageable. If you are working as an executive and your goal is to become CEO in the next two years, wake up my friend and smell the coffee. This is not going to be possible unless you are related to the CEO of the company, and even then it is not going to be easy. Set small and manageable goals where your career plans are concerned.

Controlling your life, career and future is no easy task. Once you make the decision to start, work through one thing at a time. Keep it up and before you know it you will put together a record of personal achievements and career advancement. The time to start is now.
